Up Close With Cedar Point Coasters at Winter Chill Out 2026

Cedar Point is closed for the season, so the park should be empty. And yet, once a year, Winter Chill Out opens a side door.

Winter Chill Out is a guided behind the scenes tour that lets you walk Cedar Point in the offseason, step into areas guests normally never see, and finish with lunch. Tickets were $100 dollars a person, went on sale at 10 AM on January 21, and the event took place Saturday, February 21. I joined the 8 AM group and we wrapped up around 12 PM. And, the best part is that every dollar goes to A Kid Again.

One more note before we start. This was one of the warmest Winter Chill Out mornings they have had, and it still felt colder than I expected. Cloudy skies and that lake wind will humble you fast. Wear layers, gloves, and a hat. You will enjoy the tour more if you are not fighting the cold.

Stop #1 – Jack Aldrich Theatre

Our first stop was Jack Aldrich Theatre. It set the tone right away because it showed the tour was not just about rides. It was about how Cedar Point runs as a whole. They had stations set up around the theatre that covered the behind the scenes basics of entertainment. Makeup, props, costume design, audio and sound, and how set pieces are built and stored. We even walked onto the stage and then stepped behind the curtains into the dressing area.

Stop #2 – The Sign Shop

Next is the Sign Shop, where Cedar Point designs, produces, and maintains signage across the property. This includes ride signs, directional signs, parking signs, and safety signs, along with other visual elements that keep the park organized.

The space also holds animated props and retired items, which gives guests a look at both day to day production and pieces of Cedar Point history. Highlights spotted here included retired Mean Streak signage, the Siren’s Curse tunnel fog machine, and the hill lights from Millennium Force.

Stop #3 – Maverick Launch Tunnel

Next came the stop I’ll remember forever. Winter Chill Out’s ride access can change from year to year, and in 2026 we got an absolute dream scenario with Maverick.

Maverick is a launched coaster that opened in 2007, and one of its signature moments is the launch tunnel that runs under the station. During the ride, the train races into that enclosed tunnel and blasts through a 400 foot launch, hitting 70 miles per hour in about three seconds.

Being able to stand in that tunnel during Winter Chill Out felt unreal. We had time for photos in and around the space, and the access was closer than I ever expected. We were allowed to touch the track. That was the highlight of the entire day for me and one of the best experiences of my life.

Stop #4 – The Barnyard

After Maverick, the route included a quick bathroom break and a stop at The Barnyard. Attendees could see the animals, and feeding opportunities may be available depending on the setup that day.

Stop #5 – Train Shed

The train shed was a quick stop, but it had a lot of character. A parts table sat out with pressure gauges and metal fittings laid across it, and the shelves behind it were stuffed with bolts and hardware. Right next to it was a wall of crew photos and notes. The train staff were friendly and genuinely passionate, and they were happy to explain what they were working on and how the railroad is maintained.

A train was sitting there fully wrapped like a present with a sign that read Do Not Open Until May 2026. It will be very exciting to see the reveal in May.

Stop #6 – Iron Dragon Maintenance Area

We stopped by the Iron Dragon maintenance area next. Iron Dragon has been part of Cedar Point since 1987. It is a classic suspended coaster that swings side to side as it hangs beneath the track.

Stop #7 – Siren’s Curse Maintenance Facility

Siren’s Curse maintenance was my second biggest wow moment of the day. This is a ride-dedicated maintenance facility built into the coaster itself. Cedar Point staff shared that this setup is more efficient, and they said this is the plan going forward for future coasters. The facility itself looked very clean and modern.

We saw the cars up close, and the bright green paint practically glowed under the lights. Off to the side, I even spotted a box labeled Vekoma parts, which was a small detail but very cool to notice in a real working space.

This stop was also one of the easiest places to learn, because the maintenance team was genuinely great to talk to. They were knowledgeable, proud of their work, and happy to explain what we were looking at in plain language.

Stop #8 – Linen Services

Next we visited linen services to see the massive washers and dryers used to handle laundry from Cedar Point hotels.

Stop #9 – Landscaping

Then we went to landscaping and learned how they plan and assemble the gardens for Midway Gardens. They also revealed the design they will use for the United States Bicentennial for 2026.

Stop #10

Ride maintenance was one of the most satisfying stops for anyone who likes the engineering side of coasters.

There were coaster cars throughout the building, and it looked like work was underway on Millennium Force cars. Corkscrew was visible right when we walked in, and it looked ready to celebrate its 50th year. A Steel Vengeance car was also out, which is hard not to stop and admire up close.

One of my favorite details from the day came from the maintenance team here. They use orange paint markers to draw alignment marks so parts, bolts, and screws go back exactly where they need to.

This was also the stop where I got to hold a wheel from Maverick. After the tunnel earlier, that felt like the perfect full circle moment.

Stop #11 – Lunch + Q&A

Lunch was included, and Cedar Point used it as a preview of the 2026 food lineup. We had about 30 minutes to eat, so it moved quickly, but it was still a fun way to get a taste of what the season will offer. My favorite bite was the chocolate chip bread pudding, which I would absolutely order again if it shows up on the menu this year.

They also shared several 2026 updates. Starbucks is getting refreshed with new vintage style photos, and the Starbucks at Hotel Breakers will receive similar updates. The bathrooms on Frontier Trail near The Barnyard are being fully updated. Pagoda, Sweet Spot, and Peanuts at the Point will combine into one larger shop. Veterans parking closer to the entrance is planned. A new entrance sign will be installed once roundabout construction is completed. CoasterMania will look different in 2026 with more details expected later.

They also announced Cedar Point’s Star Spangled Celebration running June 29 through July 4 with patriotic festivities, fireworks, and patriotic skydivers. Pipe Scream is now officially classified as a thrill ride, not a roller coaster.

Stop #12 – Point Plaza

Our last stop was Point Plaza, where there was new merchandise available to purchase that will also be offered during the season. They also had amazing models available to purchase made by Print My Ride Detroit.

From there we exited through Guest Services and received a poster and a Winter Chill Out beanie.

Then it was over, and I was back outside the gates looking at Cedar Point like everyone normally does. Only now I had a better picture of what is happening behind the scenes when the park is closed.

Final Thoughts

Winter Chill Out is for the person who watches coasters and wonders how all of this stays safe, clean, and ready for opening day. It is a behind the scenes look at Cedar Point operations, and it is packed with details you do not get during a normal summer visit.

Every dollar goes to A Kid Again, which makes the whole experience feel even more meaningful. And since the stops can change year to year, each Winter Chill Out has its own version of surprise. I highly recommend this event.
